Linwood Warren

Linwood Warren - LWT 27.5 Ha
Market Rasen
The RK Cornwallis Memorial Reserve
(dedicated to the memory of the late Dick Cornwallis, Chairman of the Trust 1962-68, and nearby landowner and farmer)
The reserve was once part of an extensive area of heathland encroached by afforestation and a golf course. There have been flint implements found on site, Romano-British pottery kilns, banks of medieval or later field system, butts of a 19th century rifle range and practice trenches from 1914/18. As a result there is a mosaic of habitats with a varied flora and fauna.
The high ground to the south is clay and carried oak woodland with some small-leaved lime or linden trees (from whence the name Linwood came) until it was felled. The Forestry Commission planted this area with pine. One area of pine to the south-east of this has been felled, allowing natural regeneration to occur.
The flora and fauna is both rich and varied. All three heathers occur on site (bell, cross-leaved and ling) and there are damp areas rich in mosses and lichens - including Iceland moss. 21 species of butterfly and over 200 moth species have been recorded on site. The reserve is also important for mammals, birds, reptiles and insects. Management is mainly by sheep and cattle grazing, with some scrub clearance. Small scrapes are made to encourage heather regeneration.
