Our Aims
We aim to involve local people in the management and monitoring of Coversands
sites; increase their understanding of local heritage and gain local support
for the sustainable conservation of the heathland resource.
Who Can Volunteer?
Volunteering is for everyone and any age group. It is for people of all
ages and backgrounds, however, if you are under 16 years of age, then
you will need to be accompanied by an adult. You do not need any experience
to be a volunteer! It is fun, you will meet new people, gain new skills,
get fit and feel healthier by working outside.
So what will you be involved in?
Work on a site always depends on the time of year.
Work on trees tends to be undertaken in Autumn and Winter, construction
works (such as gates, fences and footpaths), vegetation management (such
as scrub clearance, controlling unwanted vegetation) and surveys (such
as botanical or butterfly) normally during the Spring and Summer. We also
have a flock of Hebridean Sheep which require on-going management and
monitoring in respect of toe clipping, worming, shearing and
the annual
lambing in the Spring. For information on forthcoming volunteer events
you may contact the Coversands Access and Interpretation Officer for further
details or the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust who have an on-going programme
of volunteers working on Coversands sites.
Essential Information
Clothing
In cold weather, wear warm clothing and sturdy boots
or wellies. Long trousers are best, even in summer, to help avoi d getting
ticks or bites. In summer bring a sun-hat, and bring wet weather gear at
any time of the year! Gloves are usually made available. Food
and Drink
Bring your lunch and a hot drink.
Your Health & Safety/Risk Assessment
You
don't need to be exceptionally fit to be a volunteer - everybody works
at their own pace. We give safety talks at the beginning of each task
and this will outline the safe use of tools and any hazards on the site.
If you are under 16, you will need to be accompanied by an adult. There
will be a qualified First Aider on site. Please bring your own medications
with you if you have any allergies or are receiving any treatment. We
would advise you to keep your tetanus vaccination up-to-date.
